Leanne’s first reaction when asked if she’d like to go to Fairbridge Festival was “no” – she was a dyed-in-the-wool alternative music fan who didn’t do folk festivals; fiddles and banjoes were so not her thing! Under duress, she did go along and has not looked back since; in fact, she did a sort of Victor Kiam, not quite buying the company, but she now works for the festival as its marketing manager.
Her epiphany hit her like angel descending to earth to impart the gospel, it was in the chapel listening to the sublime beauty of the Volatinsky Trio, which was indeed a religious experience. This combo from Sydney playing Eastern European music reduced her to tears firmly establishing her allegiance to FF from that moment she first set foot on the hallowed gravel in 2011.
Her most enduring memory of the festival is seeing her friends, who initially attended just to support her, loving the festival’s wonderful variety as much as she does. That is along with all the other happy smiling faces that fill this weekend-long event.
Oh, and bumping into Emma Thompson in the shower queue was pretty amazing as well. Leanne didn’t recognise her at first but as soon as she opened her mouth, there was no mistaking the British actress’s identity. What a blast! Who’d have thought it in the humble but beautiful surrounds of Fairbridge Village, Pinjarra WA!
