Martin & Coole are a folk swing blues duo from Beaconsfield featuring the songs and singing of Jonathan Cope and Emma Birkett. Their debut album ‘The Roaring Gimlet’ was recorded live and acoustic at Shanghai Twang last year and the CD launch at the Kidogo Arthouse sold out twice over. Their original music is a blend of contemporary and trad folk, classic swing, Celtic, country, blues and bluegrass influences. The duo often play with some fine musicians including Ian Simpson on dobro, banjo and guitar; John Perry on bass; Rob Zielinski on fiddle; and an innovative cross-cultural ensemble with Chinese musicians Malcolm Mah on bass; Merlin Ma on bamboo flute; and Xiao Xuan on yangqin. Over the festival Martin & Coole will showcase their different line-ups in the different venues. Jon has been a founding member of number of prominent WA folk groups over the years including Fling, Blue Celts, Focsle Firkins, the Last Supper Club and Car Thieves. Emma has played with the Trio Alegra band and also has a flair for making wearable art including unique felt hats and handmade glass bikinis.
