Gus’s Bar namesake, Gus Atkins, has been an integral part of Fairbridge Festival for 24 years. He is a foundation member of the festival and has been a huge contributor to what Fairbridge Festival is today.
Gus joined the Fairbridge Festival family in the festival’s second year. While the licensed venues have always been his main role, he has had many other jobs and responsibilities over the years. Gus was a long-standing board member and treasurer and is the organisation’s resident statistician.
With a treasure-trove of great festival memories, one that stands out is the 2002 after party in Gus’s Bar when all the guests had left and the crew was free to celebrate the end of another successful festival. One of the bands had set up and started playing for the crew and was soon joined by anyone with an instrument. Gus was standing, completely mesmerised, with the then AD, Steve Barnes, who commented: “you could never buy this!” He also has fond memories of the crazy outfits that attendees in the early days would wear to celebrate the festival.
Gus’s partner, Cheryl, also enjoys the festival and this year has taken over one of Gus’s roles as the catering manager. His trusted bar staff have also been a part of the festival for many years.
A few years ago, Gus was honoured to receive life membership for his contribution to the festival, and at the same time the bar was officially named: Gus’s Bar.
Gus’s Bar is absolutely his favourite part of the festival and in 2015 – after six years of lobbying – he finally achieved the programming of music in the bar. He was thrilled to see how well it was received.
Gus dedicates himself to improving Fairbridge Festival. It means a lot to him and he loves to see the enjoyment the festival brings to the people who turn up every year.
He is looking forward to the 25th anniversary this year and hopes to see many new faces at Gus’s Bar!
