Mid-afternoon in Hoopla Club is time to relax with a beer and enjoy a set of performances by folk royalty. Michael Waugh is fast becoming a legend, Bernard Carney is one and Peter Willey will have you in tears (of laughter) as he launches a new CD.
You may just like to order another drink because its 5:45 and it’s the SHIPLOAD of SHANTY event with Albany Shantymen followed by the masterly Fo’c’s’le Firkins and you are going to want to sing! Every Tuesday evening in the sleepy port of Albany, a rousing and cheery rabble of voices drift across the town on the gentle sea breezes. The Albany Shantymen are part of the fabric of the town and even have their own shanty festival these days. The ‘firkins’ are the granddaddies of WA shanty and cast a towering shadow on the Australian shanty scene as well….and still no one knows what the flamin’ name means. Help us out lads.
Its onto the Folk Machine then a quick, rockin’ 20 minutes from the amazing Ross Vegas and we are into the Hoopla Club evening’s entertainment.
Wow, this next bit looks fun. Barrelhouse Blues unleash jook-joint session that showcases some of the country’s leading acousticians. Should be sizzling hot! The Beez buzz back in and then its powerhouse alt-latin-funk trio Funkalleros to bring the Hoopla Club to a close.
