WA’s mandolin orchestra, WAMO is a 24-piece group of stringophiles who love to pluck. They are very, very good at it and present a diverse playlist of music that will pluck a nerve with many people. They only appear about four times a year possibly because it takes the rest of the time to tune it all up! Following WAMO are Perth Scottish Fiddlers with a similar obsession to strings, only this time bowed. So…if 24 WAMO have on average, lets say 6 strings each (accounting for mando’s with 8, guitars 6 and bass with 4), that’s 24 x 6 = 144 plus 25 Scottish Fiddlers fiddles is 25 x 4 = 100, combined, is 244 strings that all need to be perfectly tuned to make these gigs sound good. Now if 35 banjos were added….forget it.
Next up is a fantastic world music set with Moishe’s Bagel followed by Kohesia Ensemble. You know a bit about Moishe’s and you may well have heard of Kohesia. If not, bassist Kate Pass leads this Persian Jazz ensemble with some of WA’s finest musicians. What a feast of exotic music right there.
